Entrepreneurship: Making it BIG

In our maiden post , you got to know how to stand out from the crowd to enable you achieve your career goals. Today, the focus is on how to make it BIG as an entrepreneur. Of course, starting a business of your own may just be one of the great ways to stand out from the crowd particularly for those who see entrepreneurship as a career.

The general definition of an “Entrepreneur” is that person who is innovative, creative and is ready to take calculated risks on some business ideas with the aim of making profit from the venture. A dictionary definition is “a person who organises and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.”

Two major points to note in this definition are;

The willingness to take risks:

In the 21st century, risk is becoming unavoidable; not taking a risk is more risky. There is a general misconception about risk, such that when we hear this word, the mental pictures created in our minds are those of our misconceptions; because we have associated ‘risk’ with the possibility of a negative result, or injury or harm or even something worse. On the contrary, the word risk is also defined as any uncertainty or ‘unknown’ when venturing into something new, or to take or run the chance of something.

The people who are ready to take the risk of starting a new business, launching a new firm, creating a unique product, rendering an uncommon service etc are the ones that eventually break grounds and break records while simultaneously setting many new personal records. It seems the greater the “risk,” the better your chances of making it BIG! Check out the biographies of some of the under-listed, globally recognized entrepreneurs who have taken huge risks and unprecedented steps to understand the importance of risk taking in entrepreneurship. Some of the 20th Century entrepreneurs include:

    Oprah Winfrey (Entertainment), USA
    Steve Jobs (Computers), USA
    Henry Ford (Automobile, Manufacturing), USA
    Bill Gates (Computers), Seattle, USA
    Mary Kay Ash (Cosmetics), USA
    Carlos Slim (Telecommunications), Mexico
    Alinko Dangote, (Business Guru), Nigeria

Or some 21st Century entrepreneurs like:

    Mark Zuckerberg (Internet), USA
    Wu Yajunand (Property Developer), China
    Drew Houston (Internet), USA
Elon Musk (Internet, Space, Energy), USA

There is the aim of making profit from the venture:

The venture you are planning on entering into must not just contribute values to the society but must also make economic sense. The greatest possibility of financial independence lies in the mind of an entrepreneur. No one can employ to enrich you; in fact some people say, “Salary is slavery.”

To ensure that what you are doing brings you income, you can use a theory I can “THE LAW OF SECRET FOCUS.” The secret focus in this context would mean that you should not focus on the money you want to make first. But on the values and solutions you want to contribute to the society and then, without doubt, money will come looking for you. I define money as the reward for the solutions you provide for people. Therefore, shift your focus from “money first” and place the focus on the being a solution provider (secret focus). Secret Focus in and of itself makes us understand that the things we pursue in life often elude us. But while chasing the exact opposite of many of these things, what we want just get added up automatically. This rule is biblically illustrated by Jesus Christ in Matt 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Also note that wealth starts from the mind and not from the pocket. Likewise, fertility is not in the land but in the mind. Therefore, take every opportunity to enrich your mind; learn a new thing, acquire new skills, go for a course, get a mentor, register for some training courses, read good books, conduct some research works, etc that will stand you out from the teeming “general population.” This is the reason you should take reading very seriously, because it is one major way to enrich your mind for wealth creation in the future.

Finally, remember that life only rewards participants and not spectators. Choose today where you truly belong. Success is affordable; affordability is only a matter of priority. Likewise, Success has explanations called “principles” and failure has one sole explanation and it is called “excuse”. What you do with this information is what will determine what it will give back to you.

I wish you the very best and register this is in your mind, “The only thing you CANNOT DO IS WHAT YOU HAVE NOT ATTEMPTED TO DO”. SUCCESS IS YOURS.

I’ve learnt with my personal experience that when you take risk and it didn’t work out as planned, another way shows up. I’m what I am today because I took the risk to flaunt a magazine. Though I got stunk after two editions but I’m still reaping the dividends. When I resume the publication, it is gonna be a bomb. Nice Write up Mr Ayo. Thanks

Hmmmnnnn….success hs many explanations called “principles” while failure hs jst one explanation called “excuse”. I caught that!!! Thnx a whole lot. I will add here that the problem of many Nigeria youths today is that a whole lot are drowning in “entitlement Syndrome”! Though, the government has a designated role to play in the affairs of the country as a whole but you and I will give account for what we made do with our lives. ACCOUNTABILITY is a choice, yet a neccesity! We have to reach out and get informed. Knowledge is power! Wisdom is profitable to direct! It is the GLORY of God to conceal a matter, yet the HONOUR of Men to search it out! We all should join in this search…it may seem as the lightest luggage, yet the heaviest duty. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE IN THE KNOW.
