Golden Minds’ Nigeria Independence Day Poetry Contest

Independence day

“AT 52”, an Independence Day poem by Gold David Amakiri wins the Golden Minds’ Nigeria Independence Day Poetry Contest!

Congratulations, Gold David!

At 52

Oh! Sour lullaby
“Nigeria at fifty two”
We sing from a slate
Of our sweet motherland
On a shattered stand

Nigeria at fifty two
Oil boom,
Power doom,
Insurgents loom.

Nigeria at fifty two
In corrupted creeks
We have in the past swam
In shady shells
We have in the past hid.

But the change we await
The change we longed for,
The change we bode,
have in ourselves come.

Like the flying flamingoes
We are the change,
We are the hope, we bode.
“Nigeria at fifty two”
Now a new song we sing
A new rhythm we resonate,
Of our groovy green and
our whimbrels white!
